Celebrating National One Health Awareness Month in January

As we start a new decade, the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine is participating in a national campaign to promote the value of One Health, a collaborative approach to finding new solutions that benefit animal, human and environmental health. In a unanimous vote in December, the U.S. Senate declared January 2020 to be One Health Awareness Month. The One Health Commission is leading a collaborative communications campaign to promote the month.

UC Davis Veterinary Medicine is a leader in the One Health approach, with collaborations both locally and globally including veterinarians, scientists, human health professionals, and others.

UC Davis is host to the One Health Institute, which includes programs such as Gorilla Doctors, which has used a One Health approach to help increase the wild mountain gorilla population, and the PREDICT and One Health Workforce programs, which operate globally to help prevent human pandemics.

The One Health approach permeates the school, and the collaborative mindset has led to everything from groundbreaking imaging technology to clinics that serve human and animal populations in underserved communities.

The One Health Commission’s awareness campaign features a different topic every day of the month. Along with other institutions, UC Davis is participating in the campaign to achieve the greatest amplification of the overall messages regarding One Health. Throughout the month of January, UC Davis will feature its unique, on-topic One Health stories in order to inspire medical practitioners, scientists, policymakers and even the general public to support and adopt the One Health approach.

In addition, the One Health Institute is hosting a contest inviting all K-12 and undergraduate students based in the U.S. to submit a photo, video, or written statement in response to the question "What does One Health mean to you?" For more information on the contest, see the announcement on the One Health Institute’s Twitter page.
