UC Davis Veterinary Hospital Adds Two Orthopedic Surgeons

The UC Davis veterinary hospital recently added two orthopedic surgeons to its faculty, bringing the Orthopedic Surgery Service back to full strength with a well-balanced team-to-caseload ratio. Drs. Denis Marcellin-Little and Barbro Filliquist joined the service in August 2017 and are beginning to see patients, as well as training surgery residents and seeing fourth-year veterinary students through their clinical training year.
“We are pleased to have Denis and Barbro join our team,” said Dr. Amy Kapatkin, chief of orthopedic surgery. “Barbro is an experienced orthopedic surgeon, allowing us to see more patients on a regular basis throughout the week, and Denis brings a level of expertise to our team that will allow us to offer additional services and give our referral community an outlet for complicated cases.”
Dr. Marcellin-Little is one of the foremost authorities in the field of veterinary orthopedics and helped develop the system for total hip replacements. With Dr. Marcellin-Little’s arrival, the service’s goal is to expand all joint replacement offerings from hip replacements to knees and elbows as well. His background will allow the hospital to offer more opportunities to help animals with unique or complicated growth deformities, limb sparing situations, complicated total joint replacements, and surgical revisions for failed joint replacements or limb deformities.

Marcellin-Little and Filliquist join our faculty,” said Dr. Jane Sykes, chief veterinary medical officer. “The Orthopedic Surgery Service remains one of our busiest specialty services, and their arrivals will take that service to a whole new level, as well as expedite appointments for our clients.”
Denis Marcellin-Little, DEDV, DACVS, DACVSMR
Dr. Marcellin-Little joins UC Davis from North Carolina State University, where he was a faculty member for 23 years. He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and a charter Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Marcellin-Little graduated from the French veterinary school of Toulouse, France in 1988. He did an internship at Hollywood Animal Hospital in Hollywood, Florida, followed by a small animal surgery residency at North Carolina State University. Dr. Marcellin-Little’s areas of interest include total joint replacement and the management of limb deformities. His research interests include biomodeling and the fabrication of custom orthopedic implants using metal 3D printing and other methods. He is establishing a medical manufacturing laboratory at UC Davis that will help patients with complex orthopedic problems.
Barbro Filliquist, DVM, DACVS, DECVS
Dr. Filliquist is familiar to UC Davis, having earned her DVM here in 2006, and completing a three-year surgical residency in 2010. She is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and the European College of Veterinary Surgeons. Dr. Filliquist completed a one-year rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Pennsylvania before her residency, and also worked in private practice in Washington state and Sweden for seven years. Her areas of interest include minimally invasive surgery, joint surgery, and the use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine and prevention of surgical site infections.
