UC Davis Adds Faculty Orthopedic Surgeon
Hospital Continues to Decrease Wait Times for Orthopedic Surgeries

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ming Lu has joined the faculty at the UC Davis William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) as an assistant professor. Dr. Lu’s clinical duties will be with the VMTH’s Orthopedic Surgery Service as well as the hospital’s Advanced Veterinary Surgery Center.
Dr. Lu earned his veterinary degree (2015) from the National Taiwan University and continued there to obtain a 3-year master’s degree (2018). He then completed the 1-year International Surgical Training Scholar program (2019) at Michigan State University, a 1-year rotating internship (2020) at the University of Saskatoon, and a 3-year small animal surgery residency combined with a MS of Comparative Health Sciences focused on meniscal tissue engineering (2023) at Oregon State University. He recently completed a 2-year American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) Fellowship in Joint Replacement Surgery (2025) at UC Davis. Dr. Lu became a Diplomate of ACVS in 2024.
“Dr. Lu brings a wealth of experience and qualifications to the orthopedic program,” said Dr. Barbro Filliquist, chief of the Orthopedic Surgery Service. “We are fortunate to have a surgeon of his caliber join our faculty.”
Dr. Lu’s research aims to advance musculoskeletal care in companion animals and humans through interdisciplinary collaboration. He uses computer-aided design software for patient-specific surgical planning and to analyze joint motion, bone geometry, and bone density, with the goal of addressing current clinical limitations. His interests also include gait analysis and tissue engineering.
“It is an honor to join the faculty of the orthopedic surgery team at UC Davis,” said Dr. Lu. “I look forward to expanding our orthopedic surgery offerings while continuing the compassionate care our clients have come to expect. Additionally, I am pleased to contribute my experience to the clinical aspect of our DVM student curriculum and our world class house officer training program.”
Since opening the surgery center in 2024, UC Davis has been able to significantly reduce wait times for non-emergent orthopedic surgeries: trauma cases are seen within just a few days, elective surgeries are now seen within 2 weeks, and appointments for lameness cases are generally available within 4-6 weeks. Life threatening emergencies are always treated immediately 24/7/365 at UC Davis.
