MMG (Microbiology and Molecular Genetics) Special Seminar
Presented by Miriam Markum, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Teaching, Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, UC Davis
Dr. Markum presents: "From Passive to Proactive: Leveraging the Learning Assistant Model For a Better Learning (and Teaching!) Experience"
About the seminar: Teaching with Learning Assistants (LAs) is a high-impact practice that enables instructors to implement a more interactive, supportive, and inclusive model of instruction. Originally developed at CU Boulder, the LA model positions undergraduates as collaborators who facilitate active learning in the classroom and accelerate course evolution. In addition, the LA teaching experience serves as a robust professional development opportunity for the LAs and improves the teaching experience for instructors. In this talk, Dr. Markum will introduce the LA model and describe her implementation of an LA program to support a high-enrollment stand-alone STEM lecture course. Attendees will leave with an appreciation for the positive impacts LA can have and concrete strategies for integrating LAs into their own courses.
