A little over two years, researchers reported a simple and quite remarkable discovery that could radically improve the treatment of foals with a condition known as neonatal maladjustment syndrome. The behavioral abnormalities seen in these foals seem to resemble some of the symptoms in children with autism. The newborn foals seem to detach, fail to recognize their mothers, and have no interest in nursing. The condition, also known as dummy foal syndrome, occurs in 3 to 5 percent of live foal births.
