UC Davis Surgery Resident Wins National Award

Surgery resident Dr. Maureen Griffin was recently awarded the 2020 American Association of Veterinary Clinicians (AAVC) Resident Achievement Award. The recognition is given annually to a resident in their final year of training who has achieved a high degree of excellence in their chosen specialty.

In nominating candidates, faculty mentors take into consideration activities, awards and productivity of the resident during their training process.

“Dr. Griffin has excelled during her residency, and she is highly deserving of this AAVC award,” said mentor Dr. Bill Culp. “Through her continued efforts, she has taken her natural technical skills and refined them to become an exceptional surgeon. Dr. Griffin demonstrates a tremendous level of dedication to her patients and clients, and clients universally enjoy interacting with her. She is relentless in her pursuit of ensuring that each of her patients receives the best care possible.”

Items for consideration include the nominee’s sustained excellence in clinical service (including performance evaluations and any service awards won), clinical teaching (including student teaching evaluations), client communications (including positive follow-up correspondence to the nominee or hospital), and research (including accepted publications).

“Knowing the high level of residents across many disciplines, I am honored to be recognized by the AAVC,” said Dr. Griffin. “I am very grateful for the support and mentorship I have received from the UC Davis staff and surgical faculty, especially Dr. Bill Culp. He has been a tremendous mentor and role model for me with endless guidance, support, and encouragement throughout my veterinary clinical and surgical training.”

Dr. Griffin is one of 115 house officers (residents, fellows, interns) at the UC Davis veterinary hospital. With the largest post-graduate training program in the nation, UC Davis faculty offer veterinarians advanced clinical experience and mentorship in 34 specialty disciplines. Upon completion of her residency, Dr. Griffin will qualify to complete extensive examinations to become a board-certified surgeon.

The AAVC was established in 1958 to enhance the quality of veterinary instruction and advocate for veterinary clinical teaching, service, and research. AAVC members are veterinary clinicians engaged in teaching and/or research at the professional, graduate or postgraduate level at veterinary colleges in the United States and Canada.

Dr. Griffin is the sixth UC Davis resident to win the award since its inception in 1998.
