Dr. Po-Yen Chou Achieves Elite Status as Orthopedic Surgeon

The UC Davis William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is pleased to announce that orthopedic surgeon Dr. Po-Yen Chou has achieved Fellow status in Joint Replacement Surgery (JRS) with the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS).
The ACVS Fellowship Program allows its Diplomates (board certified surgeons) to reach a level of expertise in a variety of surgical disciplines, such as JRS, minimally invasive surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and surgical oncology. UC Davis is one of only 10 approved training centers nationwide for the ACVS JRS Fellowship Program. Dr. Chou is the first fellow to train at the VMTH.
According to the ACVS website, upon completion of training, Fellows of these programs have specific expertise and knowledge in their specialized disciplines beyond what can be mastered within a three-year veterinary surgery residency program. Individuals participating in fellowship programs must complete all requirements of a veterinary surgery residency, achieve ACVS Diplomate status, and have their credentials approved by the ACVS Board of Regents before receiving the title of ACVS Fellow in the chosen discipline.
Dr. Chou, an associate professor with the VMTH’s Orthopedic Surgery Service and Advanced Veterinary Surgery Center, is only the second surgeon in the nation to earn Fellow status in JRS with the ACVS. Previously, ACVS granted JRS Founding Fellow status to 21 surgeons, among them is UC Davis orthopedic surgeons Drs. Amy Kapatkin and Denis Marcellin-Little. Several other UC Davis surgeons are Fellows or Founding Fellows in other ACVS fields of discipline.
