Kate Hopper, BVSc, MVS, PhD, DACVECC, was recently awarded the 2023 Zaslow Distinguished Service Award from the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (VECCS). This award is given to an individual who has demonstrated exceptional commitment and dedication while making significant contributions to VECCS and the practice of veterinary emergency and critical care. This award is chosen by the VECCS Board of Directors to honor a VECCS member who has given selflessly to grow and support the organization.

“I am humbled and grateful for this award,” said Dr. Hopper. “I am so lucky to have had wonderful mentors in my career, in particular Dr. Steve Haskins and Dr. Janet Aldrich, without whom I would not be where I am today. This award honors them as much as it honors me.”

The award is named for Ira M. Zaslow, one of the founding members of VECCS and the American College of Veterinary Emergency Critical Care. Throughout his career, Dr. Zaslow worked tirelessly to develop and spearhead the advancement of veterinary emergency and critical care. According to the VECCS website, his commitment, dedication, vision, and service to the organizations are legendary and unsurpassed.

Other UC Davis-affiliated VECCS members to win the award include Harold Davis (staff supervisor) in 2012; Dr. Ken Drobatz (alumnus) in 2007; and Dr. Steve Haskins (faculty) in 2002.

For more than 50 years, VECCS has been dedicated to the promotion of the advancement of knowledge and high standards of practice in veterinary emergency medicine and critical patient care.
