Before this summer, I wouldn’t have been able to point out Sri Lanka on a map. It is a small island country off the southern coast of India, easy to miss if you’re skimming an atlas. I had no idea how much ancient culture, national pride, natural beauty, and overwhelming generosity it had to offer.

This past summer, I had the opportunity to conduct a STAR research project in Sri Lanka.  This research project was a One Health project that studied how implementing best hygienic management practices on Sri Lankan dairy farms affect the milk quality.

I made my first trip to Central America this past June, 2014. This opportunity was presented to me when I joined the Students for One Health (SOH) project, “One Health Nicaragua”. I participated in two amazing activities that allowed me to put into practice my greatest passions for veterinary medicine, One Health and wildlife conservation. Throughout this trip, I journeyed with a classmate, dear friend, and well-seasoned traveler, Karen Sorenson.

Last year I was fortunate enough to receive a scholarship to travel to the American Fondouk Animal Hospital in Fez, Morocco. I spend 6 weeks working with working donkeys, mules, and horses at this clinic.

Karibu Kenya or “Welcome to Kenya” in Swahili. This summer I had the opportunity to return to the Mpala Research Center in Laikipia, Kenya.  While at Mpala I conducted a STAR research project on domestic dromedary camels. My research focused on determining risk factors for mastitis and high bacterial contamination of raw camel milk. This project involved a long and intensive planning process and four mentors, two from UC Davis, one from the St. Louis Zoo, and one at the Mpala Research Center itself.
