Dual Degree Program Receives Prestigious NIH Award

The UC Davis Veterinary Scientist Training Program (VSTP) celebrates its 20th year of preparing the next generation of veterinary scientists with a prestigious National Institutes of Health (NIH) award. This is the first year that NIH has granted the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) award to colleges or schools of veterinary medicine as the lead institution to support students in a dual degree DVM-PhD program.

The LNU Lightning Complex fires are more than 50 percent contained as I write this, and the latest evacuation orders have been downgraded to warnings.  Upon learning of the regional fires, our school and veterinary hospital crisis management teams went into action. Although it isn’t over yet, I want to take this opportunity to provide my deep gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the fire response, including the hospital and VERT teams, communications and development teams, and anyone else involved.

Amazon and Congo Basin Focus of New Emerging Infectious Disease Research Center

The perimeters of the Amazon and Congo Basin forests are highly vulnerable to new and emerging infectious diseases. A new research center, the EpiCenter for Emerging Infectious Disease Intelligence, will focus on these two regions to advance understanding of how viruses emerge and spill over from wildlife to humans.

In Memoriam—Dr. Leland ‘Skip’ Carmichael

We are sad to announce the passing of Dr. Leland E. (Skip) Carmichael, an esteemed UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine alum from the Class of 1956. He died peacefully on Monday, July 27, in Ithaca, NY, at the age of 90.

This past week has brought more concerning news to all of us about the recent resurgence of COVID cases in California, and nationally. The continuing challenges our nation faces, as we all attempt to control the pandemic, are complicated by multiple factors, including misinformation about control measures and resource limitations to adequately address the spread of the infection. We find ourselves facing an unprecedented challenge to continue to fulfill our obligations as an essential workforce and our important role to educate the next generation of veterinarians and scientists.
