Residents Win National Research Awards

Two residents with the UC Davis veterinary hospital recently won national research awards at the 2021 American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) Forum, held virtually this year. The residents—one each in large and small animal services—submitted abstracts that were reviewed by a panel of judges comprised of ACVIM Diplomates.

California Budget Includes Money to Help Homeless Animals

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed budget legislation that includes $45 million in one-time support for a statewide Animal Shelter Assistance Program. The program will be administered by the Koret Shelter Medicine Program, at the University of California, Davis, Center for Companion Animal Health. The increase will be used to fund grants and outreach for the state’s animal shelters over a period of five years.

UC Davis Veterinary Hospital Celebrates Dr. Jane Sykes’ Leadership

Dr. Jane Sykes, chief veterinary medical officer, will step down from her leadership role at the UC Davis veterinary hospital following the completion of her 5-year term. Under her leadership, set to expire June 30, the hospital reached new heights of success and continued to grow its reputation as one of the preeminent clinical facilities in the country. The School of Veterinary Medicine is currently conducting a search for her replacement.

Pascoe Named Interim Dean of Vet Med

UC Davis Chancellor Gary S. May has named Professor John Pascoe, executive associate dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine for 25 years, to serve as the school’s interim dean effective July 1.

State of the School 2021

Dean Michael Lairmore offered his final State of the School address on May 20, looking back on the past academic year and acknowledging the many accomplishments of the veterinary medicine community.
