In Memoriam--Dr. Dale Brooks

We are sad to share the April 12th passing of Dr. Dale Brooks, graduate of the class of 1959. He was a well-known and beloved member of our veterinary medicine family at UC Davis.

After working briefly in small animal practice then establishing an equine practice in Malibu, Brooks returned to UC Davis for a CE course in Laboratory Animal Medicine (LAM) in the late 1960s. That experience set his path for the next 35 years as a national leader in the development of LAM including serving as a consultant for NIH, for UC campuses, and other west coast universities.

Building Collaborations to Benefit Human and Animal Health

Researchers from the Schools of Veterinary Medicine and Medicine, and the Clinical Translational Science Center (CTSC), gathered last week in a half-day mixer to foster new collaborations. Three areas of focus included: anesthesia/pain, cardiovascular and orthopedic sciences. 

Dr. Melissa Bain Receives 2019 Companion Animal Welfare Award

Dr. Melissa Bain will receive the World Small Animal Veterinary Association’s 2019 Companion Animal Welfare Award in July. She is being recognized for her contributions to animal welfare through integrating the field of human-animal interactions with veterinary clinical behavior.

Veterinary School Announces Picnic Day Activities

The School of Veterinary Medicine is changing up its Picnic Day activities this year, primarily centering them in and around the Pavilion at the ARC, in an area where there is a high concentration of animal activities. The annual event takes place Saturday, April 13, 2019.

UC Davis Tops US News Veterinary School Rankings for the Fifth Straight Year

The University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine is ranked number one in the United States for the fifth year in a row in the 2020 U.S. News & World Reportveterinary specialty ranking. With this ranking, released March 12, UC Davis has been affirmed as the best in the United States by all three organizations that rank schools of veterinary medicine. 

UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine Dean Appointed President of the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges

Michael Lairmore, D.V.M., dean of the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine, has been appointed president of the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC). Lairmore, a veterinarian and scientist who is a member of the prestigious National Academy of Medicine, will serve a one-year term through March, 2020.

UC Davis Ranks First in the Nation in Veterinary Science

The University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine is ranked number one in the United States for the fifth year in a row in the annual 2019 QS World University subject rankings. The rankings, released Feb. 26, placed the school second globally in Veterinary Science. “The continued recognition of UC Davis as a world leader in veterinary sciences is a tribute to our outstanding people and programs that advance the health of animals, people, and our planet,” said the school’s dean, Michael D. Lairmore. 

2018 Elected AAAS Fellows Include Veterinary Faculty

Two UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine faculty members—Dr. Philip Kass and Dr. Isaac Pessah—are newly chosen fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which is the world's largest scientific society.
